Frequent colds in children

This type of cold is very common in children.  It is mostly caused by Kapha.  There could also be "Ama" produced by improper digestion.  If the food is not completely digested, the half-digested food gets changed into ama.  Seat of kapha is nose and the respiratory system.  Hence, these doshas express themselves in the form of runny nose, ear discharge, cough and even fever.   There are some triggering factors such as exposure to cold, rain, etc.  However, cold can be due to pitta or vata also.

Following are some simple remedies:

Swedana (sweating) is very helpful as a first line of treatment.  Body of the child should be kept warm especially feet, chest, throat and head.  Warm blanket is a good idea to let the sweat out.

For kapha type - A glass of warm water mixed with one teaspoon of tulsi juice and one tea spoon of honey can be taken 2-3 times a day.

For vata type, if there is dry cough, especially at night, take fine powders of cardamom, dry ginger, black pepper and cinnamon 5 gms. Each, mix with sugar powder 20 gm and give about ¼ of a teaspoon (about 500 mg) 3 times a day with sugar syrup or hot water.

For pitta type, (burning sensation, red eyes, and yellow mucus) – adulsa juice 1 teaspoon mixed with honey can be given 2-3 times.  You can also use Jeshthamadh powder ¼ teaspoon 3 times with honey.

Cold drinks, ice cream, sweets, fried foods, milk products like cheese, creams, yogurt etc. should be strictly avoided.  Milk should be given with turmeric mixed in it.  Fruits are really not good for this problem
